Thanks for the link! There is something I noticed in a couple of intervies James Wilby has given - maybe it`s only me? -: He tends to underestimate his talents, to make himself "smaller" than he actually is by remarking that this or that actor played a role so much better than he ever could have done it. It`s a sympathetic gesture to admire others for what they have acchieved, on the other hand I think he should be much more self confident and proud as he has proved often enough what a marvellous actor he is. Maybe it`s also a disappointment deep down from the beginning of his career that he was underestimated by others and sometimes looked at as second choice (Maurice f.e.), so he started to believe he wasn`t good enough to be rated first class - I do not think it`s some kind of fishing for compliments behind it, he seems to be too gentle and nice as a person for it.
Just something that often crossed my mind when I read interviews or statements of him...eve

He is WAY TOO SELF-DEPRECATING. Way too humble for his own good. I wouldn't say it's cost him roles (maybe it has? Doubt it), but he really needs to accept credit where it's due. Ha, it's a trait he shares with my husband! LOL
